McFarlane Toys just keeps on impressing me. Back in the day, I avoided this company like the plague. I thought the figures were oversculpted, oversexed, and way too gory. But lately I've changed my tune completely. It's not just these modern figures like Walking Dead and Halo either, I've backtracked and now own plenty of vintage 90's figures that I love. The Walking Dead season 4 is about to premiere in a few weeks and I am very excited, but not as excited as I was to find this second female at Walgreens this week. Andrea was one of my favorite characters in previous seasons. A lot of people really didn't care for her. She made very odd decisions and it was always hard to tell where her loyalties were. But overall I viewed her as tough, competent, and a very interesting character to be roaming around with the gang. In the first few episodes she could barely hold a gun, but by the end of season three she was one of the most formidable people on the show. Let's check out this great figure of Andrea below!
The likeness to actress Laurie Holden is good, but not nearly as good as some of the other characters in the line. I personally feel the likeness is better in profile than straight-on.
Andrea came with a lot of great accessories. 1.) A Vest 2.) A Pitchfork 3.) A Handgun and 4.) A Rifle.
The vest fits perfectly. It's not bulky or cumbersome like other rubbery clothing you find on action figures these days. The Rifle is nice, but seems like it might have been made for another character because it's difficult for her to hold properly or even sling over her shoulder.
The handgun is probably the best accessory because she can hold it so well. It also fits snugly into her holster (which is permanently attached to her thigh).
The pitchfork is really cool, but suffers the same critique as the rifle because her hands can barely hold on to the thick handle.
Here are an assortment of stills from the show.
She's wearing the vest!
And who can forget Laurie Holden as Officer Bennett from Silent Hill!
Time for Some Comparison Pics!
Here are the dynamic duo, Michonne and Andrea!
Cheers!
This line is tempting. I caught a bit of Walking Dead over the time & did think seriously about collecting these after Michonne was released. The first few series were rather poor. The added articulation of these newer figures is very welcome.
ReplyDeleteAndrea looks really good. Apparently the paint work is hit & miss with these figures. I'd have to see detailed pics on eBay before buying one.
Thanks Alex!
All the figures of Andrea I saw at Walgreens were painted the same. It was similar with Michonne. I wouldn't be opposed to buying one of these figures blindly in the future.
DeleteHave you seen the digital sculpt of Maggie from the next wave? I'm excited they're making so many cool figures. Someday they'll even get around to Carol I hope.
I just went & checked out the digital sculpts for the next wave. Very cool!
DeleteI really wish they'd committed to doing these in a proper 6 or 7 inch scale. I feel the same way about the Doctor Who figures. The custom base/fodder possibilities are limitless with these figures, apart from how they're not in the same scale as Marvel Legends or DCUC. For example, I bet this Andrea figure could be turned into a decent Maggie Sawyer.
ReplyDeleteYeah McFarlane's cost-cutting move to a slightly small scale made a lot of news a few years ago. I feel bad for the collectors of all those sports figures who had to deal with a scale change mid-line. Although Andrea would make a nice looking Maggie, these figures are much more detailed that anythng we've seen produced for DC, so she would never blend in properly.
Deletesuch a shame they kill her character. But that crappy storyline left no room for her to redeem. Still nice that she got a figure. Normally i prefer 6" scale but this are so cute due to their size, plus i can fit more in a cabinet. BTW, did you love little Penny? Mine plays with Iris from 30 Days of Night. AND they have to do Carol. not only shes the most interesting character in the nw season but there not many main characters left to do.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree about the fate of her character. In the current season I really felt that Sascha would be the "new Andrea", but now I'm worried that they'll kill her off. I haven't read the comics so I don't know any future plot twists. The only spoilers I have are knowing that a few choice characters will survive because I've seen them on comic cover much later on in the story. Carol has alway been my favorite character in the show, but her storyline so far this season has been awesome.
DeleteI did not love little penny. haha. I have an issue with gore and zombies and I don't buy toys of them. (Don't even ask how I sit through the show)
hahaha. just getting my fix of your answers... i have to admit i am pretty weird. I have shelves full of Disneys Magical Collection next to Macfarlane female monsters, and japanese Figma figures nest to Aliens and NBX. I am not to sure of what is the theme going on with my collection. I guess i like what i like, As long as it looks awesome! Thanks again for answering evry comment, it makes a joy to revisit your posts. Very best. Ariel.
ReplyDeleteCollections are so tough to organize. I'm in the process of moving so I'm packing up all my stuff and figuring out how I want to display everything. Sooo many choices to make. Luckily I'll have a lot more room so I won't have to keep any hidden away completely. The most gorey piece in my collection is the Covergirls Harley because of her bloody mallet (which I was very upset about... it wasn't on any of the pre-production images).
