We all know DC Collectibles has been hitting it out of the park recently with all their amazing and innovative new action figures. What I'm especially excited about though is the sheer number of wonderful additions to my Catwoman collection thanks to DCC! Seriously, my three favorite Catwomen in my collection are the last three put out by DCC. And that Jae Lee Catwoman coming out this Summer looks like it might be my favorite yet. I have no connection to Greg Capullo. I remember him being the backup Spawn artist way back in the early nineties (when Todd couldn't hit his deadlines). But beyond that, I'm only peripherally aware of his career. Clearly he has become a Batman artist of prominence. When this figure was first announced right before Toy Fair last year, I was excited for another Selina but not thoroughly impressed with the execution of the figure. In person though, I think she's gorgeous. And her body style hearkens back to the nostalgic DC Direct days. Let's check out Catwoman below!
I realize the face sculpt might be a little hard and angular for some, but that's what I like best about this figure. It gives her a very unique look among my numerous Catwomen.
Catwoman comes with her signature whip. It is made from a very soft and flexible plastic.
Catwoman's articulation is a little funny. She is a throwback to the golden days of DC Direct with her T-Crotch. She also has articualtion at the shoulders, elbows, gloves, neck, upper thighs, knees, and boots. My Catwoman's right calf is really bowed. I'm not sure if it's a packaging defect or if it is a design decision, because it actually poses really well as long as that leg extends backwards.
The original solicitation included either a variant unmasked head or a removable mask like the Hush and New52 figures. But I was surprised to find no unmasked options in the final version when I bought it yesterday. It's really okay though, because I really thought the unmasked face looked pretty funky.
Time for some Group and Comparison Pics!
Here she is with the New52 Catwoman and the BTAS Catwoman, both from DC Collectibles.
And here she is with Mattel Arkham City, DCC New52, DCC Capullo, DC Direct Arkham City, and DC Direct Hush.
Cheers!
I don't know if you've gotten any of the other capullo figures, the only one I've picked up is the owly owl man talon. The sculpting's really really amazingly strong with these figures despite how simplistic the look in pictures. It sounds bizarre and that because it is, but Talon has a fabulous ass. I should not be saying that about toys, much less the dudes, but they really did these designs amazingly well, so now i'm tempted on this catwoman as well as the Animated one.
ReplyDeleteI haven't bought any of the other Capullo figures yet, but I will definitely be getting Batgirl (and maybe her Dad). Talon is a great character. I wonder if the female Talon, Strix, will ever gain popularity. I thought she was pretty intriguing in Birds of Prey. I'll check out Talon's ass tomorrow in my comic shop... maybe i can see it in profile in the packaging haha. It's funny but I remember people saying the exact same thing about the ass on the Eaglemoss Luke Cage figurine.
DeleteA nice Art Deco feel to her, and certainly better than the eyes solicited on the unmasked face. The success here is the simplicity
ReplyDeleteI totally agree. Her simplicity is what makes her stand out. I'm perfectly okay without having the extra head because it provided unnecessary detail. I'm also really glad they didn't try to use translucent plastic for the goggles. The matte metallic finish is perfect.
DeleteI like Capullo's work, and think this figure is gorgeous! Great pics!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I keep thinking that this figure also serves as the closest example of a Darwyn Cooke Catwoman, too. It's surprising they've never done a cook Catwoman especially considering all the successful New Frontier figures.
DeleteI'd love to see a Cooke Catwoman figure!
DeleteI just read the Harley Quinn Holiday Special comic last night and there a 9-page story in the back drawn by Darwyn Cooke! It's funny how he's never drawn her before (to the best of my knowledge), because they seem like a natural fit.
