I adore the ripple-effect of movie popularity. Never in a million years would so many cool comic-based characters be getting quality action figures if not for the success of the movies. I haven't always been a fan of Marvel Select figures. The larger 7" scale, the historically minimal articulation, the focus on bulky diorama pieces (a personal non-preference), and the higher pricetags were all turnoffs for me. But the sculpts, paint, and plastic quality has always been great. I think this Gamora marks a major turning point for these figures though. The costume choice is unexpected (Marvel Now) and the articulation suddenly rivals Marvel Legends. I have a lot of high hopes for future Marvel Select ladies now. I'm guessing that after Spider-Gwen and any movie-based GOTG figures on the horizon, the next heroine we are likely to see is Captain Marvel. Between the movie and her A-list comic roles lately, she's kind of a shoe-in. I can't wait to see her. Let's check out the Marvel Select Gamora below!
This is the first time that I've ever been really impressed with the articulation on a Marvel Select female. Past figures has been hit-or-miss, but this level of articulation is very nice. It gives me hope for the upcoming Spider-Gwen figure. Gamora has hinge ankles, double-hinged knees, upper thigh swivel, hinge-and-swivel hips, rig cage swivel, and hinge-and-swivel shoulders, elbows, and wrists. The head appears to be a ball joint but mine is a little stuck. The only additional joints that could improve the figure are bicep swivels and rocker ankles. Other than that she is fantastic.
Gamora comes with two extra sets of hands, a longsword, a dagger, a large blaster gun, and two smaller hand blasters.
Gamora and Rocket Raccoon come with a rocky set piece that connects with all the other characters. There are no foot pegs or anything to anchor the figures.
This Rocket is awesome, his ankle and foot articulation is so tiny and intricate.
Time for some Group and Comparison Pics!
Here she is with the Entertainment Earth Gamora from 2015 and the Movie Gamora from 2014.
And with the 3.75" Marvel Legends figure from 2016.
With Marvel Select Black Widow and Storm.
Here she is with her pack-mate, Rocket Raccoon.
Cheers!
She reminds me of a Marvel Legends figure-in fact, when I saw this review, I thought she was one at first! She might just be the 2nd Marvel Select figure I pick up. Disney Store gets the coolest MS exclusives. First Hawkeye and now Gamora! I'm also digging the packaging. The graphics from the animated show are very eye catching.
ReplyDeleteI was really hoping she was more in-scale with Marvel Legends. I know I took a picture with the silver age MS Jean Grey and the ML Black Cat and they were very similar in size, but this one towers of her ML counterparts. I thought this figure was a Disney Store Exclusive, but apparently she was first available on the Marvel.com shop (which is probably the same entity as Disney Store, but still).
DeleteJust one head swap away from making someone from Mass Effect.
ReplyDeleteGood observation! I knew her costume reminded me of some mech-based property but I couldn't place it. I was thinking more anime-based but didn't even think of games.
DeleteThis is by far the best figure select has made since the Scar Jo Widow.
