Justice League International - FIRE!

DC Multiverse Gold Label - JLI's Fire (Target Exclusive) - McFarlane Toys 2024

I'm glad that McFarlane Toys is taking the opportunities provided by their exclusive Gold Label and Platinum products to include relatively obscure and under-merchandised characters in the DC Multiverse line. The recent Blackfire and upcoming Huntress (and variant) are great examples. Fire is a character with a huge fanbase. She first appeared in the 1979 issue of Super Friends #25 as the Green Fury (who shot green flames out of her nostrils.. no joke).  I don't know long it took for her backstory to be fleshed out. But now the commonly-told origin is that Beatriz da Costa was a Brazilian model (and secret government agent) who was accidentally exposed to a mysterious substance called Pyroplasm which gave her the green flame powers (pre-Crisis her powers were mystical in nature). She has been a member of many teams over the years and gone by many names: Green Flame, Green Fury, and her most common, Fire. She is a dynamic character who is long overdue in the toy aisles.

It was during Fire's run as a main team member in the 1987 Justice League America series (aka Justice League International), that she and her friend Ice/Icemaiden became a permanent part of DC Comics legacy. (Interestingly, the other main DC BFF team of Blue Beetle and Booster Gold was cemented in this same series). Fire and Ice are an iconic duo with a long history.
They even starred in their own comic mini-series in 2023 (they've always been relegated to team books up till now).
My hope is that by getting this Fire figure that an Ice can't be too far behind. Also, as much as I love a transparent figure, I would kill to see this re-released in a fully-painted fleshtone version with non-flaming hair. Perhaps in a Fire & Ice 2-pack, like the Blue Beetle and Booster Gold redeco'd 2-Pack. Fingers crossed! Let's check out Fire below!

I think it's great how the translucent plastic is slightly washed with paint on her face to make her facial features pop and to hide the interior skull and neck construction. I only wish the same airbrushing could have been applied to all her joints to limit that odd mechanical feel she gives when you can see her inner workings so plainly.

Fire's facial expression seems oddly serene. If you've read her stories, you know that her codename Fire isn't just about the flames. She is a hot-tempered lady. I wish her face was a tad more angry to reflect that. Especially in this powered-up fiery form.

Fire's only true accessories are two green power effects.
This is important to note because I'll be adding a lot of extra accessories later in this post that don't belong to her.

She also comes with a Collector's Card and a figure stand.

So I wanted Fire to be more Fiery.
I thought there was a Tamashii Nations Flame Effect in green. But the only branded options I could find were Red and Blue. Luckily (or unfortunately) there are a lot of impostor products on Amazon and eBay in a spectrum of colors. I got a cheap green set and I'm thrilled with how well it works with Fire.

And with my cell phone lit up underneath her.

Fire also didn't come with a flight stand. This was a surprising omission.
Here she is borrowing Starfire's stand.

Time for a Comparison Pic!

Cheers!

  1. I completely missed this figure. Definitely need to add it to my display. I also really like the green flames and will be grabbing them as well.
