Fire and Ice is a 1983 animated fantasy film by Frank Frazetta and Ralph Bakshi. I have a love/hate relationship with this movie. I love Frank Frazetta's design aesthetic. There's a dark storybook tone that stands out from all the other barbarian properties. And I like his almost visceral obsession with anatomy. It's not always sexual, but there is definitely equal-opportunity objectification between the sexes. What I have trouble with is rotoscoped animation. I know almost all cartoons use reference materials for anatomy and motion. But when it's just blatantly traced footage, I find the final product boring. Although I rewatched the movie with an open mind while editing these photos (it's streaming on Amazon) and I quite enjoyed it. Princess Teegra is the main female character in the movie. She gets kidnapped quite a few times and really steals the show. This figure from ICON Collectibles Frazetta Girls line is pretty amazing. She looks sexy and strong and her panther Shaitan is a great accessory.
I think this figure is fantastic. I definitely prefer her without the clothes.
I hope this line continues with Larn, Egyptian Queen, and Sea Witch.
A great thing about this figure is the treatment of her skintone. There are washes of pink and yellow that give it a subtle but effective sense of realism. She really stands out among the other bikini-clad figures in my collection.
Teegra comes with three heads (angry, smiling, and calm), a removable translucent blouse and loincloth (the loincloth only hangs in the front and fits around her waist with an elastic band), two hairpieces (windswept and calm), three sets of hands, a spear, and a small branch.
With her three heads and two hairpieces, you can display Teegra in six different configurations.
I definitely have my favorites. But here are turnaround pics for all six looks.
Teegra also comes with her black panther Shaitan. He has a beautiful sculpt and scale. But he is barely articulated. His head is attached with a ball joint, but there is very limited range of motion (just millimeters). Also the tail can be swiveled. His alternate head has an articulated jaw.
Shaitan comes with an alternate head with a more cartoony look. The jaw on this head is also articulated.
Unfortunately, I was unable to easily remove the realistic head to swap them. I intended to perform a boil-and-pop after I photographed them, but it slipped my mind.
Dynamite Comics has been releasing a prequel Fire and Ice series and they also published this Teegra One-Shot.
Time for some Group and Comparison Pics!
Here is Teegra with the only other Fire and Ice character released in the line so far, Dark Wolf.
(Dark Wolf also has a variant figure coming soon featuring slightly different paint, accessories, and gauntlets).
And just because I had her sitting out, here is Teegra with the LooseCollector Red Sonja.
Cheers!
Awesome figure. I haven't seen the movie. Need to check it out. I hate rotoscoping. Really didn't like it with Bakshi's Lord of the Rings.
ReplyDeleteI have the same feelings about Lord of the Rings. This is better. There aren't any annoying "silhouette" scenes, the backgrounds are really colorful (Thomas Kinkaid is a background artist) and the Frazetta anatomy aesthetic works well overall in this format.
DeleteGreat looking figure, and again, your review sells me on it ($85 on BBTS). One think MOST alternate head figures miss, especially with females, is "peril" faces. The smiling head is less important than say, a head where her eyes are closed, or just "worried" looking, as she often is in the cartoon.
