When I opened and reviewed the Transformers Legacy Evolution Antagony figure twelve months ago, I had very mixed feelings. I loved that I finally had this character in plastic. I thought she was frightening - how she couldn't feel pain and was obsessed with inflicting it upon others. Plus I love insects, so she kind of filled the void of a missing female Insecticon. My issue, however, was with the figure itself. Antagony is destined to continually be a repaint of Inferno, who is unfortunately always extremely bulky and monstrous with no femininity at all. I personally love duality in a character, so the more aggressive and maniacal a character acts, the more beautiful and feminine I want her to look. In researching for that review, I had seen her IDW Comics redesign which had her looking more like Blackarachnia. I never expected to see a toy of that design but was pleasantly surprised to find this 3rd-party upgrade kit which lets you totally transform the original figure into a tall, sleek fembot. Let's check it out below!
Note that this kit includes both add-on and swap-out parts that greatly alter the form of the original figure.
The fully-kitted final figure is not transformable as-is.
But the part swaps and add-ons are reversible so her Ant form is still achievable, just with significantly more effort.
Here are the contents of the DC-01 Kit: Two 2-piece thigh covers, two feet/ankle pieces, two hand/wrist pieces, a new crotch cover in two pieces, a torso with a ball-jointed head, and a pincer weapon accessory
(the handle on my weapon was snapped off in the packaging, but it glued on easily).
As a reminder, this is the original Antagony (which is just a repainted Inferno figure).
The first pieces I attached were the new hand/forearms. This requires you to remove the original hands (with an ant leg attached) via a simple dumbbell joint that you can easily pop in and out. There was some slight plastic flashing on the post of my kit piece that I had to sand down a bit before it would slide in nicely.
I think the most impressive part of this kit is the upper thigh pieces. There is a two-part shell that snaps around the upper thigh and really transforms the figure from a masculine silhouette to a feminine one in such a simple way.
In order to attach the new feet, you have to fold the Antagony feet up and behind to tab them into the back of her calf. Then there is an exposed peg on the outside of the shin which holds the loop on the new feet.
These seem simple, but they add a significant amount of height.
For the chest piece, you need to remove Antagony's head. Then you flip the big Ant head up and over to her back and split it into two wings on her shoulders exposing the empty torso....
...then the chest and head piece just plugs into the hollow torso.
The crotch piece is only anchored in the rear two screw ports on her butt, then it loops under her legs and is just resting against the front silver Antagony crotch, with no front anchor at all (so it moves around a lot).
When you are done, these are the pieces of the original Antagony that are leftover: her head and hands (with ant legs attached).
Plus technically the Scavenger head and weapon accessory (not shown).
Two contact points worth noting. (1) There is a spur on the rear piece of the new thigh shell that prohibits a full knee bend. This is a decorative spur that could be sanded down without disrupting the figure. (2) The shoulder spike makes contact with the Ant-head-wing. This could very likely be avoided by repositioning the kibble, but I couldn't figure out how.
Time for some Group and Comparison Pics!
Here is the 2023 Antagony alongside an Antagony with the Antagoness Upgrade Kit.
The new feet/ankles and larger head make her pretty tall.
Cheers!
