La Borinqueña - LÚZ LA LUMINOSA

La Borinqueña - 1/12 Action Figures - Lúz La Luminosa - Boss Fight Studio 2024

I've been aware of La Borinqueña since 2018 when I ordered a comic and a vinyl figure featuring the titular character emblazoned with the Puerto Rican flag. I can readily admit I'm pretty ignorant of the culture, language, and social issues of Puerto Rico, so this comic was exposing me to a whole new world (and I'm not even referring to the superheroics in the story). I enjoyed the comic quite a bit, but it quickly got buried in my stacks of weekly comics and (nearly) forgotten. I would pick up the occasional one-shot comic at my lcs, but somehow I missed out on the expanded La Borinqueña universe with all the new costumed heroes until a few years ago when this toy line by Boss Fight Studio was unveiled. I now have a shopping cart full of backissues on my browser as I type this, and am intrigued by a hardcover collected edition supposedly hitting stores in two weeks. But in the meantime, I have to judge this character, Lúz La Luminosa, purely on aesthetics. In short, she looks awesome and tough as nails.

The design of this character is really great. I love her short punky hair, her bioluminescent power effects, her ethnically ambiguous appearance (she's of Dominican and Chinese descent), and her cool costume. Lúz La Luminosa has her own comic as well which I'm excited to read so I can learn more. Let's check her out below!

I love that the art on the side of the box is by one of my favorite artists, Luciano Vecchio.

Her fleshtone hands seem a little oversized for her frame.
But luckily I plan on displaying her bioluminescent hands which look great.

Luz comes with two sets of hands, two heads, and two energy accessories showing off her bioluminescent powers.

One troublesome thing about my figure is that I could not get her arms to raise. The yellow pieces at her shoulders are butterfly joints (which work great), but I suspect the actual fleshtone shoulder is a typical hinge-and-swivel joint (despite having no visible tooling to suggest that), but mine won't move at all. No swivel movement, no hinge movement. I put her under hot water but it was no help. I will scour the internet for reviews to make sure there actually is a joint there before I break her.

I don't know if we'll get more figures or not, but the green feathered Iguaca character might have my favorite design (I'm a big bird nerd), so I would love to see her in toy form.

Time for a Group Pic!

Here are all the La Borinqueña figures so far:
La Gargola, La BorinqueñaLúz La Luminosa, and Oro El Coqui Dorado.

Cheers!
